What Is Saju? Korean Four Pillars Astrology, Explained
Saju reads your life from eight characters fixed at the moment you were born. Here is what those characters are, where they come from, and what a reading can and cannot tell you.
Where the eight characters come from
East Asian calendars do not number years, months, days and hours the way the Gregorian calendar does. Each unit is named by a pair: one of ten Heavenly Stems (天干) and one of twelve Earthly Branches (地支). The pairs cycle through sixty combinations — the same sixty-year cycle behind the “Year of the Fire Horse” headlines.
Your birth moment therefore has four such pairs:
| Pillar | Built from | Traditionally read as |
|---|---|---|
| Year pillar (년주) | Birth year, by solar term (not January 1) | Ancestry, early environment, the public “outer” you |
| Month pillar (월주) | Birth month, by the 24 solar terms | Parents, career field, the season your chart lives in |
| Day pillar (일주) | Birth day — the stem is your Day Master | The core self and the spouse palace |
| Hour pillar (시주) | Birth hour, in two-hour blocks | Children, later life, inner ambitions |
Because the year and month boundaries follow solar terms, someone born on 3 February can belong to the previous year's pillar. A correct Saju calculation uses an astronomical calendar (만세력), not a simple date lookup.
What the chart actually measures
Every stem and branch carries one of the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water — and a yin or yang polarity. A reading starts by asking three questions:
- Which element is “you”? The Day Master stem (일간) defines your nature. A 丙 (Yang Fire) person and a 癸 (Yin Water) person are read very differently.
- Is that element strong or weak in the season it was born into, and among the other seven characters?
- Which element would bring balance? This is the yongshin (용신, “useful god”). It drives practical advice: colours, directions, timing, even which kinds of people help you.
From the relationship between the Day Master and each other character come the Ten Gods (십성): categories such as Wealth, Authority, Output and Resource. The ten-year luck cycles (대운, daewoon) and yearly luck (세운) then describe how those forces shift over a lifetime.
What Saju is used for in Korea
- Self-understanding — temperament, blind spots, how you handle money and relationships.
- Compatibility (궁합, gunghap) — comparing two charts before marriage or partnership.
- Timing — many Koreans check their yearly luck (신년운세) each January and consult a reader before big decisions such as moving, changing jobs or starting a business.
- Naming — babies and businesses are often named to supply the element the chart lacks.
What a reading cannot do
Saju describes tendencies and timing, not fixed events. Two people with identical charts live different lives; the chart is the terrain, not the route. A responsible reading will tell you where the terrain is steep or easy, and when — it will not promise a lottery win or diagnose an illness. Treat it as a structured mirror, not a prophecy.
Saju, BaZi and “Chinese astrology”
Saju shares its calendar and core logic with Chinese BaZi (八字) — the systems are siblings with the same roots. Korean practice developed its own emphasis (more weight on the Day Master's strength and on the yongshin, and distinctive compatibility traditions) and its own vocabulary. If you have read about BaZi, almost everything transfers. See Saju vs BaZi vs Western astrology for the differences.

Is Saju the same as a horoscope?
No. A Western horoscope is based on the Sun's position in the zodiac on your birthday, so everyone born in the same month shares a sign. Saju uses the year, month, day and hour, giving about 518,400 distinct chart types, and it reads the five elements rather than planets.
Do I need my exact birth time for Saju?
The year, month and day give three of the four pillars and are enough for a meaningful reading of personality, element balance and luck cycles. The hour pillar adds detail on children, later life and inner drive. If you don't know it, a good reading will say so rather than guess — see what to do when you don't know your birth time.
Is Saju religious?
No. It is a calendrical and philosophical system rooted in the five-element theory of classical East Asian thought. People of any religion or none consult it.
Can Saju be calculated for someone born outside Korea?
Yes. The chart depends on the solar calendar and your local birth time, not on nationality. Reputable calculators convert your local time to the solar-term calendar correctly.
How accurate is Saju?
Accuracy depends on correct calculation (solar terms, true birth time) and on the reader's skill. There is no scientific evidence that Saju predicts events; its value for most people is as a structured framework for reflection on temperament and timing.
