What Is Your Day Master? The 10 Heavenly Stems, Explained

If you learn only one thing about your Saju chart, learn your Day Master. Every other judgement — strength, lucky element, the Ten Gods — is measured from it.

Updated 2026-10-16 · LotusSaju editorial · Based on classical Four Pillars (四柱命理) method
In one sentence: The Day Master (일간, ilgan; also “Day Stem”) is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar. It is one of ten characters — five elements in yin and yang form — and it is the “I” of the chart: the other seven characters are read by how they relate to it.

How to find your Day Master

The day pillar is calculated from your birth date on the sexagenary (60-day) cycle, independent of month and year. There is no shortcut from your birthday alone — the cycle has run continuously for centuries, so a calculator counts days from a reference date. The free LotusSaju reading shows it in the first screen. If you already have a chart, it is the top character of the third column.

The ten Heavenly Stems

StemElementClassical imageCore nature
甲 GapYang WoodTall treeUpright, pioneering, stubborn once rooted. Grows toward goals in straight lines; dislikes being bent.
乙 EulYin WoodVine, grassFlexible, persistent, diplomatic. Climbs by winding around obstacles rather than pushing through.
丙 ByeongYang FireSunRadiant, generous, visible. Energises others; struggles with routine and with hiding feelings.
丁 JeongYin FireCandle, lampWarm, focused, perceptive. Illuminates a small circle deeply; needs fuel (support) to keep burning.
戊 MuYang EarthMountainSteady, protective, slow to change. A natural anchor for others; can be immovable.
己 GiYin EarthField, garden soilNurturing, practical, absorbent. Makes things grow; can take on too much of others' weight.
庚 GyeongYang MetalRaw ore, axeDecisive, principled, blunt. Cuts through; needs Fire (challenge) to be shaped into a tool.
辛 SinYin MetalJewel, needleRefined, exacting, sensitive to criticism. Shines when polished; sharp under pressure.
壬 ImYang WaterOcean, riverExpansive, intelligent, restless. Moves constantly; depth that others underestimate.
癸 GyeYin WaterRain, mistIntuitive, adaptable, private. Seeps in quietly; nourishes without announcement.

The images are not decoration: classical texts reason with them. A 甲 tree needs Water to grow and Metal (pruning) to take shape; a 辛 jewel is ruined by too much Fire; a 壬 ocean needs Earth (banks) to be useful. Much of a reading is this kind of elemental reasoning applied to your own stem.

Strong or weak? The question that follows

Knowing your element is only step one. The reader then asks whether that element is strong (well supported by the month's season and by the other characters) or weak (drained or controlled). A strong Fire person benefits from Water and Metal to spend that energy productively; a weak Fire person needs Wood to feed the flame. Same stem, opposite advice — which is why generic “Fire sign” descriptions miss the point.

The element that restores balance is the yongshin (용신). In practical readings it shows up as the colours, seasons, directions and types of people that tend to go well for you, and the months in a year when decisions land.

Day Master and relationships

The branch under your Day Master is the spouse palace (배우자궁). Its element and its relationship to the stem above it describe what you look for in a partner and how partnership tends to feel. Compatibility readings (궁합) compare two Day Masters first: some pairs generate each other (Wood feeds Fire), some control each other (Water puts out Fire), and the same pair can be a gift or a burden depending on who is strong.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Day Master the same as my Chinese zodiac sign?

No. The zodiac animal comes from the year branch and is shared by everyone born that year. The Day Master is the stem of your birth day and is far more individual.

Can my Day Master change?

No — it is fixed by your birth date. What changes over time is the luck cycle (대운/세운) that interacts with it.

Which Day Master is the best?

None. Each has strengths and vulnerabilities, and the quality of a chart depends on balance and support, not on which stem you have.

Why do two calculators give me different Day Masters?

Almost always a date-boundary issue: the Saju day starts at 23:00 (the 子 hour) in classical practice, so a birth at 23:30 can belong to the next day. Time-zone handling can also differ. A reliable calculator states its convention.
